Nancy Chandler, CT(ASCP),IAA
Nancy Chandler CT(ASCP),CT(IAC), is a 30+
year senior cytotechnologist currently
employed by Clinical Pathology Laboratories
in Austin, TX. She received her education
from University of Houston and her
Cytotechnologist degree from Baylor College
of Medicine, where she was previously
employed as a research assistant. She began
her Cytology career with Brown and
Associates Laboratory in Houston follow by
eight years at Clinical Pathology Laboratories
in Austin. Nancy then returned to the
Houston area to be close to her
grandchildren. While living in Houston, she
began working at the Methodist Hospital
where she participated in evaluation and
reporting of gynecologic, non-gynecologic
cases and assisted with fine needle
aspirations. Nancy was also responsible for
administering the CAP Laboratory
Comparison program testing. Happy to be
back in the Austin area, she rejoined her
CPL family where responsibilities include
screening gyn and non-gyn cytology as well
as participating in gyn quality control.
Nancy is a member of the International
Academy of Cytology.

Hector R. Garcia, MS, SCT(ASCP), CMIAC
Hector has more than 20 years of
experience as a practicing cytotechnologist
and supervisor. Currently, he is the
Supervisor of the Cytology Department of
Clinical Pathology Laboratories in Austin,
Texas. Hector retired as an Army
cytotechnologist where he served at several
Army Hospitals and Medical Centers.
Hector received his cytology training from
Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam
Houston in Texas. He received his Bachelor
of Science (Biology) Degree from the
University of Puerto Rico and a Master of
Science degree in Business organizational
management from The University of La
Verne in La Verne, California. He is a
member of the American Society for
Cytotechnology, American Society of
Cytopathology, American Society for Clinical
Pathology, The International Academy of
Cytology and the 2005 president of The
Southern Association of Cytotechnologist
(SAC).
Hector’s main interests are mentoring young
cytotechnologists and the development of
new careers path in the field of
Cytopathology.
Secretary
Karen Schuster, CT (ASCP), IAC
Karen Schuster grew up in Houston and
lived in Indonesia for four years before
moving to Austin, TX in 1990 to attend St.
Edward’s University. She graduated from
St. Ed’s in 1994 with a B.S. in Biology and a
minor in religious studies. After working as a
lab tech in a chemical standard production
lab while simultaneously in retail for a skin
care company, she applied to the University
Hospital School of Cytotechnology in San
Antonio, from which she graduated at the
top of her class in 2001. That same year
she went to work at Clinical Pathology
Laboratories in Austin and is still working
there. Her experience includes screening
gyn and non-gyn specimens, and last year
she became IAC certified. She volunteered
on CPL’s Lab Week Committee for a few
years and is now actively involved with two
cytology organizations. She helped
coordinate the first annual silent auction in
2010 for the ASCT which raised money for
continuing education endeavors and will be
volunteering at this year’s ASCT annual
conference. Karen loves the outdoors and
in her spare time enjoys cycling, hiking,
swimming, and anything related to health,
nutrition, and fitness. She also enjoys
international travel and spending time with
her baby niece.
